John 4:23-24 (KJV)
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
True worship must be done in spirit and truth. This means that true worship goes beyond external acts, such as singing songs or attending church services. It is an intimate, heart-to-heart connection with God's word, rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. To worship in spirit means connecting with God on a deep, spiritual level. It is a change of our identity spiritually. We must place his word, written by the spirit, above our thoughts. In order to truly worship God in spirit, we must surrender all of our thoughts to his word.
Worshiping in truth involves embracing the truth of the gospel. It’s acknowledging Jesus Christ as the only begotten Son of God, who died on the cross for our sins—past, present, and future. True worshippers accept this gospel of salvation.
Accepting the gospel means recognizing our need for a Savior, distrusting our thoughts, and trusting in Jesus’ finished work on the cross. As we worship and accept this truth, it seals us with the Holy Spirit and empowers us to live a life of true worship.
Worshiping in spirit and truth also means being united with God in spirit and heart. This unity with God comes from a deep, personal relationship with Him. We also yield to the Holy Spirit when we follow pray, accept the word of God above our thoughts, and read the bible.
True worship also produces fruit in our lives. It impacts our actions, relationships, and attitudes. If we have the gospel as the center of our worship, then everything we do is an act of worship, glorifying God and reflecting His love to the world.
I hope we can all truly worship our Lord Jesus by placing the gospel first in our hearts and above all things. Amen!
