This Is What Grows Your Faith
Romans 10:17 (KJV)
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the importance of simply listening. We’re often more focused on what we want to say, on getting our point across, and proving ourselves right. But true growth, whether in our personal lives or in our spiritual journey, begins with listening.
Listening and having a receptive heart are foundational to learning and growing. Just as we can’t receive knowledge without first being open to it, we can’t grow in our faith without first being open to hearing the gospel. Romans 10:17 tells us that "faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
This isn’t just about physically hearing the words of the Bible—it’s about having a heart that’s ready to receive and accept what God is speaking to us.
A closed heart cannot learn or receive. We must be able to listen and believe.
It’s important to recognize that our growth in Christ doesn’t come from our works or our efforts. It comes from receiving what has already been done for us through Jesus. We can’t work our way into faith or earn our salvation. Instead, we listen to the gospel, we hear the truth about Jesus’ sacrifice, and through that hearing, we receive faith.
When we listen with an open heart, we position ourselves to receive God’s grace, wisdom, and direction. This applies not just to our spiritual life but to all areas of growth. Whether it’s in relationships, in our work, or in our personal development, the ability to listen and be receptive is what allows us to grow.
Jesus often spoke about the importance of having ears to hear. Jesus knew that the ability to listen and truly hear His words was the key to transformation.
Just like with the gospel, we’re not asked to work our way into understanding or growth. We’re asked to listen, to be still, and to receive. The transformation comes through the work of the Holy Spirit, not through our own striving. Our part is to be open, to listen, and to trust in what God is doing in us and through us.
Faith comes by hearing not doing.
When we approach life with a receptive heart, we begin to see changes not just in our spiritual life but in every aspect of who we are. We become better listeners in our relationships, more teachable in our learning, and more open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This kind of receptivity is what allows us to grow in grace, to learn from our experiences, and to move forward in faith.
Listen well and you will grow.
Are you truly open and receptive to what God wants to teach you? Remember, it’s not about what you do; it’s about what you receive.
Amen!
